SOWELL BLASTS OBAMA OVER HIS POLITICAL OPPORTUNISM AND IGNORANCE OVER VETERAN SUICIDE RATES

The smartest black man on the planet tears the man pretending to be the smartest black man on the planet a new one.

Now that Sen. Barack Obama has become the Democrats’ nominee for president of the United States, to the cheers of the media at home and abroad, he has written a letter to the secretary of defense, in a tone as if he is already president, addressing one of his subordinates.

The letter ends: “I look forward to your swift response.”

With wars going on in both Iraq and Afghanistan, a secretary of defense might have some other things to look after, before making a “swift response” to a political candidate.

Because of the widely publicized statistic that suicide rates among American troops have gone up, Obama says he wants the secretary of defense to tell him, swiftly:

-- “What changes will you make to provide our soldiers in theater with real access to mental health care?”

-- “What training has the Pentagon provided our medical professionals in theater to recognize who might be at risk of committing suicide?”

-- “What assistance are you providing families here at home to recognize the risk factors for suicide, so that they may help our service members get the assistance they need?”

-- “What programs has the Pentagon implemented to help reduce the stigma attached to mental-health concerns so that service members are more likely to seek appropriate care?”

Does Obama know how the rate of suicides or homicides among military veterans compares to the rate of suicides or homicides among their civilian counterparts? Do the facts matter to him, as compared to an opportunity to score political points?

Perhaps even more important, do the media even care whether Obama knows what he is talking about? Or is the symbolism of “the first black president” paramount, even if that means a president with cocky ignorance at a time of national danger?

The media have been crucial to Obama’s whole candidacy. His only achievements of national significance in his entire career have been media achievements and rhetorical achievements.

Perhaps his greatest achievement has been running as a candidate with an image wholly incompatible with what he has actually been doing for decades. This man who is now supposedly going to “unite” us has for years worked hand in glove, and contributed both his own money and the taxpayers’ money, to people who have sought to divide us in the most crude demagogic ways.

Hope and change that jackass. You just got punked.

This just pisses me off. Do I need to point out why? This Iwo Jima vet says it all:

"Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, told the Business & Media Institute on April 17 that using that photograph for that cause was a “disgrace.”

“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Mates said. “Whoever did it is going to hell. That’s a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor.”

Mates also said making the comparison of World War II to global warming was erroneous and disrespectful.

“The second world war we knew was there,” Mates said. “There’s a big discussion. Some say there is global warming, some say there isn’t. And to stick a tree in place of a flag on the Iwo Jima picture is just sacrilegious.”

JOHN KERRY NOW SAYS HE WANTS TO HELP VETERANS

John Kerry has spent 24 years in the US Senate without authoring a single piece of successful legislation concerning US veterans. Moreover, he has built his political career in large part by publicly, and unfairly attacking veterans as war criminals, rapists and murders. For example, in 1971, John Kerry gave the following Congressional testimony:

"I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command….

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country."

But, Senator Kerry is now using veterans to further his career in a new way. On his campaign site, Kerry asks us to "support our troops". Kerry says:

We must be mindful of what America has always asked of our servicemen and women. It takes a special individual to see your buddy get hit, and put yourself between him and incoming fire so that medics can tend to him. It takes a special person to work day by day in an environment where it is impossible to distinguish friend from foe.

And it takes a special kind of asshole to come back from combat and shit on the very people who served along aside you. But hey, starting in 2008, Kerry wants to help veterans. He wants us to to help those men and women that fought for us. Starting in 2008 he intends to do just that. Apparently, from Johnny's point of view, veterans who served before 2008 were murderers and rapists not deserving of our help. The only reason I can think of for this sudden change of tune is that there must be an influx of Hispanic veterans in Massachusetts and Johnny feels this is a good way to get their vote.
