More belt-tightening in the "worst economic times since the great depression". This seems like a good signal to send your graduating students. Spend a whole lot of money you don't have so you can "look good". That is the Obama way, no? When I was growing up, they had a not so politically correct term for people who were more concerned with looking good than paying their bills. Yeah...that one.
What started as a small graduation ceremony has mushroomed into a $700,000 gala as UC Merced officials plan for first lady Michelle Obama's commencement speech.
Campus spokeswoman Tonya Luiz said school officials have yet to secure sponsors to cover the costs, but with the May 16 event approaching plans must move forward.
Luiz said their biggest obligation is "to make UC Merced look good."
The state's newest university has 500 graduates who enticed Obama in a letter-writing campaign.
