The federal government has relied on social security as a cash cow for many years. You know that money we all pay in to the fund in order to be supported in our old age? It's not there and never was - D.C. has always spent it every year while tossing IOUs into a cigar box claiming it was our retirement fund.
This year the budget shows the end of that luxury. Not only do our contributions not fund present expenditures for today's retirees, but we'll have to find another $ 28 billion just to pay for our parents and grandparents upkeep. I'm sure the Chinese government will be happy to support our old folks, since we can't. 'Cause they're just that kinda people, always concerned about takin' care of strangers ... since they've solved all their societal problems and have such a surplus.
As I recall, just a year ago the estimates were that this horrible reckoning would not happen until the year 2017. What has changed since a year ago? I know it'll come to me, but at the moment I just can't put my finger on it ...
