He may be death to the American economy, but Barack Obama is good for business in the third world. So, we can expect the same type of improvement here soon. Here are some examples I have collected.

Would Obama Send American Troops to the Congo?

A mess is developing in the Congo. Would Obama be so foolish as to send American troops to intervene?

Congolese rebel chief Laurent Nkunda said Monday he would fight African peacekeeping troops if they attacked him, as concerns grew that east Congo's conflict could suck in neighboring armies.

Leaders from Africa's southern and Great Lakes regions have offered to send troops to try to help pacify east Democratic Republic of Congo, where fighting between Nkunda's Tutsi rebels and the army has uprooted hundreds of thousands of people.

African and Western governments are worried the recent upsurge in fighting in North Kivu, which borders Rwanda and Uganda, risks drawing in Congo's neighbors as occurred during a previous 1998-2003 war. That war involved six African armies and the conflict and its aftermath killed several million people.

What has Obama said of American troop involvement in African conflicts?

ABC's Diane Sawyer asked Obama Jr., on Jan. 3, about his appeal to the people of Kenya and "particularly to President Kibaki of the Kikuyu tribe" to do something to stop the violence.

"If you were the president, at this moment," Sawyer asked, "would you do more. Would you send in troops to stop that violence?"

"Well, I don't think we're at that stage yet. Obviously, at this point, we're monitoring the situation," Obama Jr. answered.

American conservatives already suspect that Obama Jr's much proclaimed opposition to America's war against Muslim terrorist in Iraq is more about his Muslim heritage than peace. Obama Jr's "I don't think we're at that stage yet" answer to Sawyer stirred immediate reaction from a former U.S. Congressman who saw the Sawyer interview. "Yet"? We all know what that means. If elected, at what stage will Barack Obama be willing to send American servicemen and women into the Kenyan meat grinder."

Never mind we're discussing the Congo. The above comments show that despite the wisdom of every president before him, Obama believes there is a tipping point in African conflicts at which the shedding of American blood is acceptable. Despite the fact that there is absolutely no national interest in any of the war-torn countries, Obama has shown that he is at least willing to consider the idea of commiting American troops in battle on the dark continent.

During a 2006 Kenya visit, Obama Jr. was asked if he sees himself as a Kenyan-American. He answered, "I'm an American and proud of it, and I'm also an African-American, which means I share a bond of struggle but also joy with people of African descent everywhere."

Obama Jr made a point of saying his heritage in Africa and Asia would shape his presidency, giving him special insight and impact on "the next hot spots" around the globe. Obama Jr. told the people of Kenya that he wanted everyone in America to know about their troubles and promised to push for the United States to help.

In addition to perhaps wanting to send troops to Africa to help his motherland, would Obama send troops to Africa to aid one of his biggest supporters. Warren Buffet?

But why would Buffet want Obama to send troops to Africa? The answer? UNICEF. Warren Buffet is tied to UNICEF as the director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which recently gave a large sum of money to the US Fund for UNICEF. And as fate would have it, UNICEF is currently trying to distribute aid in the Congo. And things are not going so well in that regard.

A fragile ceasefire is falling apart in North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, further deepening an already catastrophic humanitarian situation. Over the last two days, fighting between rebels and government troops and their allies has forced thousands more to flee.

“This illustrates just how on edge the population is,” said UNICEF Communications Specialist Jaya Murthy in Goma. “These people have fled several times. Today could have been their fifth or sixth time.”

UNICEF was in Kibati camp administering an emergency measles vaccination programme for 13,000 children when the exodus began. The vaccination program is now on hold.

“We just don’t know what’s going to happen, never mind from day to day but from hour to hour,” said Mr. Murthy.

Warren Buffet has been one of Obama's most noteworthy supporters. He has endorsed Obama. He has donated to Obama's campaign. Last summer, he even booked himself for two $28,500 Obama fund-raisers in Chicago. In addition, Obama has already mentioned that Buffet may serve as his Treasury Secretary. Further, Buffet has been considering business investments in South Africa. Investments that would benefit from a stable Africa.

It can be openly speculated that Warren Buffet will demand repayment for supporting Obama by having the US Military send troops to Africa to control rebels so that UNICEF workers can provide aid. Clearly the two share the same sympathies when it comes to assisting Africans in need. And Buffet is above all, an investor. And he is on record as considering investing in South Africa. Investments that would not be prudent on an unstable continent. This speculation would move that much closer to reality if Buffet is indeed named as Treasury Secretary. Buffet already has Obama's wallet. Such an appointment would give him Obama's ear as well.

So is it beyond imagination to think that Obama would embroil American troops in an African conflict? Not at all. Consider Joe Biden's comments when calling for the immediate deployment of a peacekeeping mission to Darfur.

“The U.S. and the international community must deploy a multilateral peacekeeping force as soon as possible. This force must be sufficient in size and equipment and have the mandate – and the means – to protect the people of Darfur. Peace in Darfur requires a global response. The U.S. can and will play a major role, but so must the United Nations and the African Union.”

Not only is the possibility of Obama deploying American troops in an African conflict a possibility, if we believe Joe Biden, it's a guarantee.

UPDATE: PIRATES DIE STRANGELY AFTER TAKING IRANIAN SHIP

We reported on this earlier. Here's a follow up:

A tense standoff has developed in waters off Somalia over an Iranian merchant ship laden with a mysterious cargo that was hijacked by pirates.

Somali pirates suffered skin burns, lost hair and fell gravely ill “within days” of boarding the MV Iran Deyanat. Some of them died.

Andrew Mwangura, the director of the East African Seafarers’ Assistance Programme, told the Sunday Times: “We don’t know exactly how many, but the information that I am getting is that some of them had died. There is something very wrong about that ship.”

The vessel’s declared cargo consists of “minerals” and “industrial products”. But officials involved in negotiations over the ship are convinced that it was sailing for Eritrea to deliver small arms and chemical weapons to Somalia’s Islamist rebels.

The drama over the Iran Deyanat comes as speculation grew this week about whether the South African Navy would send a vessel to join the growing multinational force in the region.

The Iran Deyanat was sailing in those waters on August 21, past the Horn of Africa and about 80 nautical miles southeast of Yemen, when it was boarded by about 40 pirates armed with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades. They were alleged members of a crime syndicate said to be based at Eyl, a small fishing village in northern Somalia.

The ship is owned and operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, or IRISL, a state-owned company run by the Iranian military.

According to the US Treasury Department, the IRISL regularly falsifies shipping documents to hide the identity of end users, uses generic terms to describe shipments and operates under various covers to circumvent United Nations sanctions.

The ship set sail from Nanjing, China, at the end of July. According to its manifest, it was heading for Rotterdam where it would unload 42500 tons of iron ore and “industrial products” purchased by a German client.

At Eyl, the ship was secured by more pirates — about 50 on board, and another 50 on shore.

But within days those who had boarded the ship developed mysterious health trouble.

This was also confirmed by Hassan Allore Osman, minister of minerals and oil in Puntland, an autonomous region of Somalia.

CHINA'S NEW SLAVE EMPIRE

To see them, as they plod miserably past, is to be reminded of pictures of unemployed miners in Thirties Britain, stumbling home in the drizzle with sacks of coal scraps gleaned from spoil heaps.

Except that here the unsparing heat makes the labour five times as hard, and the conditions of work and life are worse by far than any known in England since the 18th Century.

Many perish as their primitive mines collapse on them, or are horribly injured without hope of medical treatment. Many are little more than children. On a good day they may earn $3, which just supports a meagre existence in diseased, malarial slums.

I can give you no better explanation in miniature of the wicked thing that I believe is now happening in Africa.

Out of desperation, much of the continent is selling itself into a new era of corruption and virtual slavery as China seeks to buy up all the metals, minerals and oil she can lay her hands on: copper for electric and telephone cables, cobalt for mobile phones and jet engines - the basic raw materials of modern life.

It is crude rapacity, but to Africans and many of their leaders it is better than the alternative, which is slow starvation.

It is my view - and not just because I was so nearly killed - that China's cynical new version of imperialism in Africa is a wicked enterprise.

China offers both rulers and the ruled in Africa the simple, squalid advantages of shameless exploitation.

Another in a rash of stories about Al Qaeda's emergence in North Africa:

It is a vast expanse of desert where conditions are so inhospitable that almost no one lives there. But for al-Qaeda – on the run in Iraq and under attack in Pakistan and Afghanistan – this stretch of the Algerian Sahara has proved fertile ground in its quest to open a new front on Europe’s southern doorstep.

Intelligence sources and Western diplomats have told The Times that a new force – an Algerian group calling itself al-Qaeda in the Land of Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) – aims to create an arc of influence throughout North Africa by spreading Osama bin Laden’s “brand” through a fusion of disparate fundamentalist groupings.

Ernst Uhrlau, the head of the German foreign intelligence agency, said recently: “We are watching the activities of al-Qaeda in North Africa with great concern. A handful of groups have become ensconced there, largely unobserved, and are strengthening bin Laden’s terrorist network. What is evolving there brings a completely new quality to the jihad on our doorstep.”

In Tunisia this week the French President echoed this nervousness. “Who could believe that if tomorrow, or after tomorrow, a Taleban-type regime were established in one of your countries in North Africa, Europe and France could feel secure?” President Sarkozy asked.

Intelligence sources contacted by The Times in London, France, Spain, Germany and the US as well as in North Africa show a remarkable uniformity when describing the threat posed by AQIM. At present it is not the size of its membership that is causing alarm – one Western intelligence source said that its hardcore numbered about 200 fighters – but the speed with which it has reorganised itself in a region emerging from a conflict that has claimed up to 200,000 lives in the past decade.

Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.

Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.

"You just have to be accused of that, and people come after you. We've had a number of attempted lynchings. ... You see them covered in marks after being beaten," Kinshasa's police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko, told Reuters on Tuesday.
"I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke," Oleko said.
"But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it's become tiny or that they've become impotent. To that I tell them, 'How do you know if you haven't gone home and tried it'," he said.

Penis snatchers? I bet these guys are Hillary supporters.
