Breathe In, Breathe Out

When I've had too much societal input, particularly politics and like right now, I like to escape to music. For some people, it's food, for others, booze or drugs, for me, I love music. I can escape an entirely miserable day by hearing a few bars of my favorite songs. So, today, the Narwhals and I invite you to hear a personal favorite, Jethro Tull, and an 11 minute cut from the 40-some-odd minute opus, Thick As a Brick.

Escape with the Narwhals!

G 'N" F'ing R!

My God these guys could have rewritten rock and roll history. As it is, they came close and left a huge mark. It pains me to think Axl fucked it all up. But we have what we have. Ladies and gentlemen.... Night Train from the Ritz NYC 1988.

For the Minister of Culture...

It's Friday afternoon and I'm feeling funky.

Luckily for me, my favorite band can play it all.

Play funky for me, Stones. I shall soon be home drinking. Monday never comes.

Gotta love 'em.

Steven Tyler Falls Off Stage

Seems he did one twirl too many and fell backwards off the stage at some motorcycle rally. I went to youtube to see if the video is up yet. Not yet. Until then, we must be content with this. Hilarious.

It's Friday. Shall We Rock?

This song mirrors how I plan my Friday night.

Start off slow... Build it up... Break it down... Then tear the motherf*cking roof off the hizhouse! Then stop... Then tear it off again. Rise, repeat, mofo's.

I'm special. Mother says so.

Reasons Ali Took Up Guitar #3

Back in the dark ages of my life, picking through mass graves and burned out tanks of our many battle fields, I came across a rather odd item inside the rusted remains of an old Camaro. It was a red mouth with a tongue sticking out of it. It was hanging from the rear view mirror. Thinking it was some kind of sign from Allah that my family would eat soon, I ran as fast as I could back to my small, rat infested apartment in Tikriti Al-Shidoobee. I showed it to my sister, Fatas Al-Roker.. "Fatas! Fatas!!!" I screamed, "Look what I found! Surely Allah has blessed our pathetic family! We shall eat soon!!!" She just laughed. She told me it was the logo of a famous infidel rock group called the Rolling Stones. Fatas knew a lot about music. In fact she went on to record music and become a rather big star in her own right. However it did not end well. At first she sang many, many hit songs about the glorious rise of our leader Saddam Hussein. Then, well... she became a little too aggressive. Many of her songs were critical of the regime. It all came to a head when she released the song "I kissed a Kurd, and I liked It" She was thrown in a vat of sulfuric acid for that one. I miss Fatas. She turned me on to the greatest rock and roll band in the world. This song, Love in Vain, showcases the great Mick Taylor. He has inspired me to play from the soul.

Enjoy!

Reasons Ali Took Up Guitar #2

Among the many records we’d secretly import to my dusty little home town inside Lamb bladders, was the album documenting the Woodstock Festival. On this album there were many hippy bands and assorted whack- jobs like Joan Baez and Country Joe and the Fish. But in between could be found some real talent. One such band was Ten Years After. The song was the epic foot stomper called “I’m Going Home”. This song made me long for the day that I’d be released from Children’s Prison. I was in Children’s Prison for most of my early 20’s. I lucked out that I was there in the first place so I shouldn’t complain. I was arrested for possession of Pop Rocks at my friend Khookhin Al- Dente’s house. I was obviously a full grown adult but when the authorities stripped me of my pants they started laughing and decreed me an 8 year old with a pituitary problem. Joke was on them I guess. Children’s Prison was easy! We only had to dig mass graves. The adults had to test mustard gas and were forced to listen to Barbra Streisand in their cells. But still in all, I missed home. “I’m Going Home” helped pass the time. I played air guitar to this song in my head countless times, anxiously awaiting the day I could get back to my record player and put it on. Praise be to God I did.

Enjoy!
