Ralph the Swimming Pig: The Cousin Kenny Chronicles (Vol. 13)

In San Marcos, Texas, there used to be a tourist attraction called Aquarena Springs that featured a swimming pig, named Ralph. I've never seen Ralph swim, but one day, many summers ago, while visiting my brother, I did sit in my car in the parking lot of Aquarena Springs for about 10 minutes, contemplating whether it was worth the $15 admission fee to see that pig swim. I decided against it because, as I figured it, a swimming pig was not all that amazing. If I'm not mistaken, every animal, insect, foul, reptile, etc, except for human beings, has the natural ability to swim to some degree. So, a swimming pig would not be all that remarkable. Rather, what would be remarkable would be the type of person who would pay $15 dollars for a 10 minute show featuring women with large thighs in unattractive swimsuits frolicking with a swine that no doubt, had relieved itself in the pool water on numerous prior occasions. So I left and spent my money on the fajita plate at Taco Cabana and later, some bowl of lime sherbert. Kind of a crappy day now that I think about it.

UPDATE: I did some hands on research with my oldest son's pet hermit crab. I stand embarassingly corrected. Not all God's creatures have the natural ability to swim. By the way, anyone know where I can find a hermit crab on a Sunday afternoon? The boy will be home in a couple of hours.

Cheeseburgers and Gutter Thieves: The Cousin Kenny Chronicles (Vol. 12)

A few weeks ago, someone stole my step ladder from in front of my door. I was hanging Halloween decorations, went inside to eat lunch, and when I came back, the step ladder was gone. Stolen in broad daylight. Certainly, I was miffed, but I thought very little of it after that.

During the past couple of weeks, however, during my lunch hour, I have noticed about 5 different men briskly walking down the sidewalk carrying long pieces of house gutters. Most of the time, the pieces of gutter were folded in half. I'm not an idiot, so after the second or third man I saw with a gutter piece tucked under his arm, I began to realize that these people are stealing the gutters right off of houses, and cashing them in as scrap metal. And then it clicked that that is probably the same reason my step ladder was stolen. Either that, or some midget needed it to get a can of peas out of the pantry.

This past Monday, I watched an elderly lady spend about 10 minutes trying to yank the rebar out of a concrete parking lot barrier. Not sure why, but I gave her my cheeseburger. She cursed me and threw it on the ground and resumed working on the rebar. She never did get the rebar removed. But she did, before leaving, pick the cheeseburger up and take it with her. She even gave me one those "thanks buddy" head nods as she walked past my car. But you know, by that time, she had pissed me off to the point that I just wished I had my cheeseburger back. I did not give her one of those "it's all good" head nods in return. Because frankly, it wasn't all good. At that point, it was pretty damn far from all good.

Things I'm Not Comfortable With: The Cousin Kenny Chronicles (Vol. 11)

I've had my headphones on all evening...Grooving, to the sounds of the 70s and listening to some smoking cessation tapes consisting of whale farts and waves crashing against rocks located on the coast of California that these days, have more rights bestowed upon them by our government than that same government bestows upon myself.

I have been in a mood of late....Very uncomfortable. Uncomfortable not with myself...Not by any means...I have a dog, a car, and every album the Rolling Stones ever made. That pretty much qualifies me to speak on any subject. No, I'm uncomfortable with things...things and people...People who are doing things...Remembering what my incarceration counselor once told me, during one of our anger management sessions, I took out my pen and created a list of those things and people...The only paper I had available was an Arby's bag...It's 5 for $5.95 now...it used to be 5 for $5...those days are gone forever.

I'm uncomfortable that our President knows how to properly pronounce "Pak-i-stan" and "Tal-i-ban", but thinks Austrians speak "Austrian".

I'm uncomfortable that Full House is still in syndication and I can't find Gilligan's Island on any channel.

I'm uncomfortable that Iraqi citizens show more respect for our veterans than the Director of Homeland Security.

I'm uncomfortable with the fact that the First Lady is wearing $540 sneakers and I can't even find two socks that match.

I have several more entries in my list, but the remainder are covered in Arby's sauce. Did I mention that it's now 5 for $5.95? It's still a good deal. It will take time for said sauce to dry and I'm able to post the remainder of the list. Until then...

Cheers,

Cousin Kenny

The Cousin Kenny Chronicles: Obama is President

Obama is president!

Do you feel it? No more war! No more poverty! And "All in the Family" has been removed from syndication in all areas of America except the deepest of the South. Is it OK to feed my hermit crabs cat food?

The illegal immigrant working the Wendy's drive-thru undercharged me. My Frosty was on the house. Only thing is, she didn't throw a spoon in the bag. Yeah, I know. So what good is it?

Our boss just informed us we would be receiving our year-end bonuses in the form of carbon credits. Does Best Buy accept those?

I am due in court in a matter of minutes. "Lewd behavior with a non-tax paying citizen". How can you tell anymore? They look a lot older than they did when I was growing up.

HAPPY EARLY 4TH OF JULY: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 10)

Today I got the day off...God bless America...I've been real busy...Pork shoulder is marinating nicely...a mixture of apples and various spices....Soon I will slow smoke it, fat side up, over a low burning bed of charcoal and moist apple wood...It will take me 6 hours...which allows for quite a bit of beer to be consumed...I took the kids to the big fireworks tent...They offer a free camel ride if you buy more than $50 of fireworks....My kids didn't get to ride the camel...But I did buy some smoke bombs, black cats, pooping chickens, sparklers, black snakes, and a crap load of them firecracker tanks I love so much...Tonight, the kids will think I'm God...but God will know I'm just a drunk with a lighter

SPELLING MISSISSIPPI: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 9)

Growing up in the South, my town was part of the last school district in America still adhering to forced busing as part of a larger desegregation policy. Consequently, my elementary school was 40% black even though the black population of my town was less than 5%...As such, for many of us white kids, it was the first and only experience we had with black culture.

I recall one Spring day, in school, we were learning to spell the names of all 50 states...The teacher would go around the room, in a clockwise manner, selecting students to spell a particular state...Connie spelled Vermont...Kendra spelled Maryland..and I spelled Kansas...Then the teacher called on CL.

CL was a black boy who was missing the top half of the index finger on his right hand...He was poor and he wore his big brother's old pants that were held up, not by a belt, but by one of those extra large safety pins people used to use to fasten cloth diapers...he smelled like cat piss...but he didn't have a cat...and his head was nappy...or so said the other black boys...he liked to draw pictures of dogs in country settings even though he lived in the projects where dogs weren't allowed.

"CL"?...the teacher asked..."Can you spell Mississippi"?...CL didn't answer...but he was moving kinda funny...his legs were shaking and his fists were drawn into a ball..."CL"?...the teacher asked again..."Spell Mississippi".

CL then took two steps back away from his desk...and then several of the other black kids, boys and girls, got out of their seats and rushed to stand beside him...and inexplicably, without warning, they began clapping...and shuffling their feet...and jiving to and fro like chickens in a barnyard...then they commenced to chanting and gesturing..."M" (and they all raised their hands up and touched their heads with both hands as to form the letter "M")..."I" (and they all stopped, stood straight up, hands to their side, to form the letter "I")..."crooked letter...crooked letter" (and they all swirled their hips around as if to form the letters "S...S")..."I" (and they stopped again, placing their hands to their sides to form the letter "I"..."crooked letter...crooked letter" (and they all swirled their hips around again to form the letters "S...S")..."I" (and again they stopped, grinning ear to ear, and placed their hands to their sides to form the letter "I"..."humpback humpback" (and they all bent at the waist while arching their backs like a cripped old man) to form the letters "P..P"..."I" (stopping for the last time, they again placed their hands to their sides to form the letter "I".

And then, as suddenly as it had started...the strange dance stopped...and they all returned to their seats...saying nothing more...the teacher stood there...seemingly not surprised at all (undoubtedly, as a veteran teacher, she had seen this dance before)...but the rest of us sat in wide-eyed amazement...in complete shock...this was unlike anything we had seen before...This shucking and jiving was new to us all...Our collective judgment of the performance had not yet been rendered before the teacher called on the next student, Russell, a freckled faced red headed boy who lived on a nearby tobacco farm.

"Russell"?...the teacher asked..."How do you spell Florida"?..."I don't know"... he said, pointing across the room to one of the black boys that had helped spell Mississippi..."but don't ask THAT ni**er how to spell Weesiana"

OTIS THE FROGMAN: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 8)

It was nagging at me...so I googled it...and this is what I found...

Otis the Frogman was a black man from Georgia, his nickname, presumably, a reference to his unusually formed limbs. His act was to roll, light and smoke a cigarette using only his lips. Until he was 28, he had eked a living from hawking pencils and other goods; his break came when he showed his cigarette trick to a carnival that was passing through town and was asked to join up as a novelty act. He took up the offer, describing it as "the best thing that had ever happened". In addition to enjoying the traveling and being accepted as a valued member the group, the income had allowed him to buy a small house in his hometown.
I thought I had only imagined Otis the Frogman...Really, I thought that I had never seen what I saw...You know how your recollection plays tricks on you and you realize sometime later that things were never as you recall?...I doubted my recollections of Otis...from so many years ago...at the Dixie Classic Fair...the October air crisp and cool...my floppy hair obscuring my eyes...a Loni Anderson poster, won after $15 worth of ring toss, tucked firmly under my arm...But I saw it...It was almost exactly as I recall...as validated by my own internet research...conducted just 20 minutes ago...and I realize at right this very moment...I should have left that memory alone...not even sought to verify it...things were better that way...my life was better then...and it was better just 20 minutes ago...before Google solved the mystery...I need a cigarette.

CARVILLE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 7)

Popping the top on the Fresca...nose to the can...the leaping bubbles gently kissing his rather, large and bulbous nose...no time to pour a glass...he'll have to drink from the can..."Ewww...like the negroes?", he asks himself..."Yes...just like the negroes", he answers...Shuffle...quickly...shuffle to the window...But don't draw back the drapes...They'll see me...He'll see me..."Who dat?...Who dat?...and what's he have in his hands"?...He comes the same time...every year"...a thump...by the front door..."Run...run away"...to my safe place...to the safe place"...Amongst the shoes...and under the coats..."no one can touch me here...no one can touch me here"

Years later...after the clean and green ordinance passed, they would find him...barely breathing...emaciated....surrounded by half-eaten bags of skittles...clutching a crudely constructed mobile...adorned with cardboard likenesses of Martina Navratilova and other female athletes from former communist eastern-bloc states...with special detail given to their over-developed, steroid obtained features...it was yet to be hung...on the porch...by the front door...Fifteen years of Sears and Roebuck's catalogs...in two separate stacks...and on the door, written in blue crayon, on a page ripped from a junior college enrollment catalog, a note, that read simply..."Carville doesn't live here anymore"

IF I WERE PRESIDENT: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 6)

If I were president...I would build a really big bonfire in Gary, Indiana...The biggest the world has ever seen...All Americans would be invited to come and witness the awesome spectacle...Correction, all Americans would be compelled to come...I would make it one big party to celebrate America...There would be all kinds of neat things to do at my party...and good food to eat...potato salad for all...and lots of porta-potties...no waiting...live musical acts abound...puppet shows for the children...bingo for the elderly...We would talk...laugh, cry...all that stuff...then...at precisely midnight, on the third day, I would abruptly and emphatically call an end to the festivities and ask everyone to leave...I would then, at 6:00 a.m. that morning, issue an executive order to forcibly deport any person within the continental United States outside of a 10 mile radius from Gary, Indiana...that would leave, in my estimation, only the fine Americans who had stayed after the party to help clean up...and perhaps a few people who couldn't remember where they parked their car...all the others?...deported to a country where it's not common courtesy to help someone clean up after a party...It is with the people who stayed after to help pick up--the hearty stock of after-hangers--that I would rebuild America...That's what I would do if I were President.

ANT FARM: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 5)

I didn't have an ant farm as a child....But my next door neighbor did...I remember when he got it and set it up...He placed it under one of those flexible-neck study lamps that were so popular in the 70s...He didn't place it under the lamp so he could study their habitat or behavior....Best I can tell, he put it there so he could burn ants with a magnifying glass even when it was raining outside.

COROLLA MAN - THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 4)

This morning, at a red light, a man driving a Toyota Corolla stopped next to me...he had his windows down...all four of them...and was blasting Foreigner's "Urgent" over his stereo...I had my driver's side window down half way as I was smoking a cigarette...which made his little morning concert all the more annoying...Knowing the general nature of traffic lights, and the their tendency to turn green after a certain period of time, I waited patiently, anxiously awaiting my opportunity to distance myself from "Corolla Man"...green...great...I purposely drive 10 mph over the posted speed limit to ensure that I hit the next light before it turns red...poor synchronization...I still hit the red light...and in the distance, creeping up on me like a monthly car payment, that noise...once again...Foreigner..."it's urgent (urgent), urgent (urgent)...emergency"...I think to myself..."ass!"..."clown!"..."who the fuck do you think you are?"...not quite finished with my cigarette, I endure...once again waiting for the light to change...yet not as patient as the time before...but during the wait, I resolve myself to one thing...the situation at the next light will be different...somehow, some way, things will not be as before...but what?...I could put out my cigarette, half finished, and roll the window up...but these things cost good money..and I enjoy the cool tobacco refreshment...so that option is off the table...I could yell at him to "turn that noise down"...but that's bush league...in this professional part of town...Then it occurs to me...like a stroke of genius...I fumble through the console..."AC/DC"?...no...Otis Redding?...no...ah ha...got it...windows down...I pop it in...I turn it up...loud as it will go...factory speakers pushed to the brink...windows rattling...small animals fleeing...seismologists on alert...the jets are scrambled...----danananana da da dana...dananana da da dana ----"ahhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaa"....----...The Rolling Stones!...."Rocks Off" you Foreigner listening nancy boy!...Rocks-fucking-Off!!!!...boomp3.com. ...

I look straight ahead...I smile to myself...feeling I had already accomplished the most important thing I will accomplish all day...the light turns green...but I'm in no hurry now...but Corolla man seems to be...he drives, purposefully it seems, over the speed limit, just as I had, in an attempt to make the next light...---he does not...and slowly, like a monthly car payment, I roll up next to him..."plug in flush out and fire the fucking feed"...again I smile...my life is good.

TRADING BLOWS WITH THE WIND: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 3)

Where I live it's very windy...almost always windy...and I don't care much at all for the wind...When I have time, I will stand in the backyard waiting for a strong gust...and then I will pounce on it with the fury of a tiger...or a lion...or any other mammal known for its ferocity...There I will stand...throwing hands, elbows, knees, and dishing out head-butts...and generally, after 4 or 5 hours, the wind will move along, to another state...admitting its inferiority to my superior stamina and stealth

Once, my neighbor saw me during one of my bouts with the wind and asked me if I was practicing Tai Chi...I thought about it for a second...thought about how crazy it would sound if I told him what I was really doing...thought about how it would spread all around and make me the laughing stock of the neighborhood...then I looked at him...and I told him..."I'm fighting the fucking wind you gap-toothed tub o' lard!...And I'm winning!"

DISCOVERING FRANK SINATRA: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL .2 )

I first discovered Frank Sinatra when I was 19...I was getting ready to board an army plane to Germany...I had my walkman, but had forgot to bring any cassettes...There was this makeshift PX at the airfield that had some cassettes in one of those rotating wire shelves...New Kids on the Block, Toni Tony Tone, Cinderella...and other various selections of the day...and then there was this tape of Frank's Greatest Hits...except it really wasn't his greatest hits...it was just the songs that whoever made the cassette could get a license for...real old stuff...and while all the other soldiers put their money down on the New Kids on the Block, I bought the Sinatra tape...and a MAD magazine...and some toothpaste and shower shoes...and some Dippity Do because, at that time, I was really into keeping my flattop tight...for the ladies

I listened to that tape non-stop across the Atlantic...conscience and sleeping...and thought to myself..."I like this...but I wonder which one of these other goomers on the plane is going to call me a fag for listening to it"....Well, as it turns out, nearly all of them called me a fag for listening to it...even the old lifers....having that memory, I wish they were here now...so I could ask them...out of faux curiosity..."Are you still a New Kids on the Block fan?"

THE BATS OF AUSTIN, TEXAS: THE COUSIN KENNY CHRONICLES (VOL. 1)

In Austin, Texas there is a bridge where over a million Mexican free-tail bats will congregate in the summer...and every summer evening, at dusk, tons of people will assemble to watch the bats fly from underneath the bridge in search of food...One summer I visited my brother who lived near Austin...and one night we got all liquored up and drove down to the bridge to see the bats...We thought it would be a good idea to go down there with tennis rackets, butterfly nets, and wearing football helmets...not to do any actual harm to the bats, but just to see the people's reaction...to our surprise, no one said anything about it being a bad idea or displayed any sign of disgust...We did, however, have three different people tell us that the best way to go about our business was with a lawn chair and a shotgun...God bless Texas
